Perceptle, a perception test you play in your browser

Perceptle is a free daily perception test. Instead of asking what you know, it asks how well you see, time and judge: hold a button for exactly four seconds, find a color you saw for a second, tap the center of a circle from a short arc, react the instant a panel changes. Each test takes a few seconds and the whole Perceptle set takes about three minutes.

Every answer is measured, not marked right or wrong. You see exactly how far off you were, in milliseconds, pixels or percent, and Perceptle turns that distance into a score out of 100. Small misses cost little and big misses cost a lot, so a good day and a great day look different.

There is nothing to install and no account to make. Perceptle runs on phones, tablets and computers, and on a phone held upright the board turns to fill the screen. Open Perceptle, press Start, and today's perception test begins.

How to play Perceptle

Press Start and Perceptle shows the first of ten tests. Each one opens with a single line telling you what to do. Press Go when you are ready, answer on the board, and press Lock in. The reveal then shows the right answer next to yours, with the gap between them and your score.

  • Some Perceptle tests flash something and take it away: a color, a set of dots, a row of bars. Watch closely, because it will not come back.
  • Some ask for a judgment you can adjust: drag a line, stretch a shape, slide a speed until it looks right.
  • Some are about time: hold for a set number of seconds, or react the moment something changes.

The ten tests get a little harder from the first to the last. Leave mid-test and Perceptle gives you a fresh one when you come back, so nobody gets a second look. The full rules are on how to play Perceptle.

How your Perceptle score works

Each test is scored out of 100. A perfect answer scores 100, and the score falls away smoothly as your miss grows: every test has a typical miss that scores about 61, and half of that scores about 88. The ten scores add up to a total out of 1000, and the total earns a title.

TotalTitle
900 and upSharp-Eyed
800 to 899Keen
650 to 799Steady
500 to 649Wobbly
Under 500Fooled

The results page draws your day as a ring of ten colored wedges, one per test, each as long as its score. It is the quickest way to see which of your senses was sharp today and which one Perceptle fooled.

See how you rank against today's players

When you finish, Perceptle scores your answers again on our server and compares you with everyone who played the same puzzle. You see the share of players you beat overall, and for each test. The first player of the day is told so, and the first few see how many came before them until there are enough players for a fair percentage.

Only your first finished run of each Perceptle puzzle counts, and the server never trusts a score sent by the page, so the ranking stays honest. It keeps moving as more people play, so it is worth a look again later in the day.

More ways to play Perceptle

  • Perceptle Unlimited: endless rounds of ten random tests, each round a little harder than the last, with your best round saved.
  • The Perceptle archive: every past daily puzzle since No. 1, so a missed day is never lost.
  • Practice any single test: one perception test at a time, as long as you like, getting harder as you improve.

The daily puzzle is still the heart of Perceptle: one set a day, the same for everyone, new at midnight in your own time zone.

Streaks, stats and sharing your score

Perceptle keeps your games, your average, your best total and your streak in this browser, with no account. A streak counts the days you finished on the day itself. Catching up from the archive adds to your stats but not to your streak.

Share your result as a short line of colored squares, one per test, or as a picture of your score ring sized for stories and chats. When the ranking is in, the share adds your place, like Top 12%. Friends who play the same day get the same ten tests, so the comparison is fair.

Why a daily perception test works

A perception test is most useful when you take it often. One result says little; thirty days of Perceptle results say a lot. Because every Perceptle puzzle is scored on the same scale, your totals line up from day to day, and the stats in your browser show your average creeping up as your eye for time, color and space gets sharper.

The daily format also keeps Perceptle fair and social. Everyone meets the same ten tests on the same date, so a friend's 812 and your 790 mean the same thing. Compare totals, compare score rings, and see which perception test tripped each of you up. Then come back tomorrow, because the next Perceptle lineup will be different.

  • Same puzzle for everyone each day, so results are directly comparable.
  • About three minutes, so a daily perception test fits in a coffee break.
  • Every Perceptle result is measured, not marked, so progress is easy to see.

The science behind each perception test

Every Perceptle test is built on a classic task that researchers use to study the senses: reproducing a time interval, recalling a color, remembering where things were, judging a shape's balance point, averaging a group at a glance, the Müller-Lyer line illusion, matching speeds, mirror symmetry, comparing areas, reading a curve, telling close shades apart and simple reaction time.

The puzzles, scoring and design are our own. Scores are for fun and for beating yesterday's you. A perception test like this is not a medical or psychological assessment, and the same senses that feel sharp in the morning can be a little off after a long day, which is part of what makes a daily check interesting.
